The Old Dark House 1932 ‧ Spooky-Comedy ‧ 72 min
Director: James Whale
Starring: Boris Karloff, Gloria Stuart, Raymond Massey, Lilian Bond, Charles Laughton, Melvyn Douglas, Ernest Thesiger
Unlike most of Universal horror-themed movies of the 1930s, this is a pre-Code comedy in a haunted house. James Whale directs and it's based on the novel Benighted (1927) by J. B. Priestley. Driving through a brutal thunderstorm in Wales, three travelers take refuge in an eerie house owned by the Femm family. Reluctantly admitted by Horace Femm (Ernest Thesiger), the three sit down to a strange dinner. Horace is neurotic; Morgan the mute butler is an alcoholic; and Horace's sister, Rebecca , raves about chastity. More storm-driven guests arrive with an industrialist and chorus girl. Chaos ensues with the odd mix of characters.

The Night of the Hunter 1955 ‧ Thriller-Drama ‧ 93 min
Director: Charles Laughton
Starring: Robert Mitchum, Lillian Gish, Shelley Winters, Billy Chapin, Sally Jane Bruce, Peter Graves
A corrupt minister-turned-serial killer, Rev. Harry Powell (Robert Mitchum) attempts to charm an unsuspecting widow and steal $10,000 hidden by her executed husband. As the only film Charles Laughton directed, this atmospheric dark fairytale and the film's lyrical and expressionistic style sets it apart from Hollywood films of the 1940s and 1950s. It has influenced countless directors such as David Lynch, Martin Scorsese, Spike Lee, and the Coen brothers. The story is based on a true killer, Harry Powers, who was hanged in 1932 for murders in Clarksburg, West Virginia.
