Meetup Description: Proud Teen Mums
Melanie Rijkers, April[masked] - May[masked], Melkweg Gallery

A pregnant woman is a beautiful thing, we all agree on that, but what if it?s a teen? Morally questionable? There are regulations for getting your driver?s license, why not for motherhood, some would argue. Teenage mums are ruining lives even before those lives got started, and without them even knowing it. Some of them are smiling, radiant even. And what about the photographer? Wasn?t it also cheap and underhand and heartless for her to exploit them for some commercial stunt? She herself claims otherwise, and so it would seem, do the girls in the pictures. All of them are said to have made a conscious choice about keeping the baby. Teenage pregnancy is not recommendable, that?s for sure, even the girls in the pictures know this, but once they give birth, you may want to consider leaving them some pride. About who they are, about the choices they make. Allegedly, that?s also why everyone got involved in this project.

Pure. Proud Teen Mums. 75 Portraits of Young Teen Mums in the ages between 16 ? 22. Proud of their pregnant body and/or children.

Info from the photographer
?These young mothers have a near mythical radiance that mothers in their late thirties have often lost. Even stretch marks and other traces of giving birth are shown with pride and without a hint of embarrassment. No Photoshopped Barbie dolls, but real women of flesh and blood. In fact, it is sort of an introduction to the naked reality of a mother?s body for the ?plastic fantastic? generation.?

There is also a photo book for sale during the exhibition, called PUUR (19,95 euro), and it will also be on sale in the book shop as of April 1. Earlier try-outs of this exhibit are said to have moved both young and old people to tears.
