***************
Director Akiko Ōku (Tremble All You Want) turns her compassionate eye toward the inner life of an anxious college student in this tender, gently offbeat romantic drama. After a string of chance encounters, Konishi (Riku Hagiwara), a solitary young man who carries an umbrella even on sunny days, forms an unlikely bond with the equally sensitive Hana (Yumi Kawai). As Konishi becomes increasingly consumed by the thrill of new love, however, his narrow focus begins to strain the relationships around him. Sensorily rich and quietly playful in its rhythms, She Taught Me Serendipity traces the fragile intersections of coincidence, infatuation, and emotional growth with warmth, humor, and aching poignancy.
“A winning mix of gentle humor and touching human drama that will speak to viewers everywhere.… Ōhku has created a crisply packaged and deceptively deep gem.” —Variety
Directed by Akiko Ōku (Japan, 2024, 127 min.). Japanese and English with English subtitles.
