There is a specific kind of quietness that comes with living far from where you grew up. It’s the feeling of a festival day arriving on the calendar, but the streets outside your window in Lille don't reflect the celebration you feel in your heart.

For many of us, these traditions have been kept in small ways—a specific spice in a jar, a phone call home, a meal cooked in a solitary kitchen. But festivals are not meant to be lived in isolation. They are meant to be a shared breath, a crowded table, and a reminder that we belong to a community, no matter how many borders we have crossed.

### The Spirit of Ugadi

Ugadi marks the South Indian New Year, a time of renewal and reflection. At its heart is the Bevu Bella—a mixture of neem and jaggery. It is a dish that mirrors life itself: a blend of the bitter and the sweet, reminding us that we can embrace both when we are together.

### What to Expect

This is not a performance or a formal dinner. It is an invitation to step into a space that feels like a home kitchen.

  • The Medium: We will cook authentic South Indian dishes together—the kind of soul-warming food that isn't found in restaurants.
  • The Connection: We will share the stories behind these generational recipes, learning why this day matters and how it connects us to those who cooked before us.
  • The Tradition: In true South Indian fashion, we will gather on the floor to share our meal. We’ll be eating off fresh banana leaves, embracing the natural, earthy way of dining that has been practiced for centuries.
  • The Food: We will sit down as a group to eat, talk, and turn strangers into neighbors. You are invited to eat with your hands to fully experience the textures of the meal, though we’ll have utensils available if you prefer.

If you are new to Lille, if you are missing the flavors of South India, or if you simply crave a deeper connection to a culture different from your own—you are welcome here. Whether you come alone or with a friend, you don't need to be a "chef." You just need to be hungry for good food and genuine company. This is a space where the presentation doesn't have to be perfect, but the warmth is guaranteed.
