Opening reception for Leni Sinclair photography exhibit. Leni has a storied past in Detroit and Ann Arbor. She fled East Germany and emigrated to Detroit. She photographed numerous jazz and rock artists. She was married to John Sinclair and together they formed the White Panthers.
Join us for a special opening celebration honoring the legacy of photographer and Eminent Artist, Leni Sinclair.
This evening marks the opening of our newest exhibition at the Detroit Historical Museum, LENI: Looking Through the Lens, showcasing the vision of a special woman who captured the vanguard sound of jazz, rock, rhythm & blues as Detroit’s cultural voice was coming into focus. Known as “The girl with the camera,” Leni photographed from within the moment. Her over 100,000 images endure as a powerful record of time when Detroit’s Avant-grade spirit spoke to the American Culture.
The evening will be moderated by WDET’s award-winning host, Ann Delisi who will lead an engaging conversation with Leni, exploring her life, artistic vision, and enduring impact on Detroit’s musical and cultural landscape.
Guests will also enjoy a live performance of an ensemble led by Kasan Belgrave, son of legendary trumpeter Marcus Belgrave. A gifted saxophonist, Kasan’s playing style reflects his father’s lineage, respectful of bebop and jazz traditions while infusing his own soulful improvisation.
The evening will include a selection of wine and beer, each ticket includes one complimentary drink.
Guests will also receive a copy of Sinclair’s 2016 Eminent Artist’s Monograph book, sponsored by the Kresge Foundation as a parting gift.
Celebrate the opening of this landmark exhibition with an unforgettable evening of photography, conversation, libations and live music.
