Curiously Code Coding Lounge + Skills Workshop - Intro to Data Analysis & Visualisation with R

Join us at our Curiously Code Coding Lounge + Skills Workshop special event ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿ’ป.

What to Expect:
This Curiously Code Coding Lounge will be run in two parts:

Part 1: Skills Workshop - Intro to Data Analysis & Visualisation with R (1 hour) or Coding Lounge

In the first hour, you have the option to either attend the skills workshop, or engage with the open coding lounge format. It is entirely up to you.

If you'd like to attend the workshop, here's some handy information and pre-requisites.

Introduction to Data Analysis & Visualisation with R (Created & Facilitated by Dr. Harry Green)

About Dr. Harry Green:
Harry is a mathematician and programme director of Exeter University's MSc in Health Data Science. His research uses large datasets of healthcare records and genetic information to make predictions about health outcomes and help us understand what causes disease. See https://experts.exeter.ac.uk/26884-harry-green/about for more information about Harry's research and https://www.exeter.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/courses/medicine/healthdatasciencemsc/ for the MSc in Health Data Science.

Summary:
R is a popular programming language in statistics and data analysis. This workshop will introduce you to two common packages in R: dplyr for managing data tables and ggplot2 for visualisation and plotting, using the Titanic Survival Prediction Dataset as an example.

We will start by reading the data into R and using filtering commands to answer questions like 'what percentage of female passengers survived?' and 'what was the average age of males travelling in first class with children?'. Then, we will make graphics to visualise the data, helping us understand features like the age distribution of our dataset and the links between age and survival rates.

Pre-requisites:
It will be very helpful if you have installed RStudio prior to the workshop and downloaded [Titanic-Dataset.csv](https://www.kaggle.com/datasets/yasserh/titanic-dataset) using this download button. Alternatively, you can use the website posit.cloud, which runs RStudio in your web browser.

Part 2: Open Coding Lounge
In the second hour, you can continue to experiment with what you have learnt from the workshop, or you can use the coding lounge space to connect with others or work on your own stuff.

About the Coding Lounge
You can bring a project, a coding course to work on, or if you are just looking for inspiration we have some resources that you can use to get started and people you can pair with and get help on your code. Everyone is welcome, newbies to coding, or if you are a seasoned developer.

Note: Please bring your own kit (e.g. laptop, books etc.) along, as we only supply WiFi and the space for you to use.

You can join us in-person on Thursday 6th March 2025 at 18:00:00 GMT. You can drop by anytime and leave anytime. If you are intending to attend the workshop, please arrive by 6pm, so we can start at 6.15pm.
