Building a Second Brain

Kyle Carmitchel is the Director of Site Reliability and Cyber Hygiene at CFA Institute. He is also the Founder and CEO of Freehold Software, LLC. Kyle recently confirmed that his employer is comfortable with him operating Freehold Software for side contracting work with local small businesses.

Through Freehold Software, Kyle has been developing a personalized AI agent architecture that began as a “second brain” MCP he created for Claude. He later extended that architecture onto his Mac mini using a Claude Agent SDK agent that persistently helps manage the second brain, acting as its librarian.

This agent, called Bosun, connects to additional data sources including email inboxes, calendars, reminders, and bank accounts. It interfaces with Kyle exclusively through iMessage, including group chats with his wife and children.

Bosun is already capable of participating as an intermediary in family discussions, such as helping evaluate whether the family can afford purchases under discussion. It also keeps logs of goals, vacation plans, and family history, including a record of every visit the family has made to Alamo Drafthouse.

Kyle believes this architecture could become a compelling operating layer for small businesses. He is currently partnering with a local construction company on a proof of concept.

Domain-Specific Agents: Why the Future of AI Is Smaller, Sharper, and Composed

Most AI agents today are built like Swiss Army knives: one big model, every tool, every integration, and a growing pile of context. Justin Schroeder, co-founder of Standard Agents, will argue for a different architecture: domain-specific agents that are small, focused, composable, and easier to reason about.

Justin Schroeder is a Charlottesville-based full-stack engineer and AI builder with deep experience in backend systems, product strategy, and high-quality interfaces. He is a partner at Braid LLC, co-founder of Standard Agents, and has recently worked on open-source tools and frameworks for AI-assisted software development, including projects around coding agents, agent-friendly UI frameworks, benchmarks, and agent orchestration.

This talk will explore why monolithic agents become expensive, fragile, and hard to secure, and how teams can instead build systems made of specialized agents with narrow permissions, explicit responsibilities, and clean handoffs. We’ll look at what this means for real-world AI builders: lower token costs, better reliability, safer enterprise deployments, and more practical paths from demo to production.
