Commonwealth Drive Cleanup
Details
Join us as we clean up the Commonwealth Drive corridor!
We'll meet at 2:00 PM at 2001 Commonwealth Drive, Charlottesville, VA 22901 — look for the CLP sign.
We're working three connected areas: the informal trail that runs from the 29th Place road along the Costco retaining wall, the drainage way alongside it, and the wooded buffer between Commonwealth Drive and the tree line. The trail has an informal gathering spot that's accumulated a heavy load of bottles and cans, and the surrounding brush is holding years of blown-in and dropped litter.
This is a corridor that neighbors, employees, and shoppers move through every day, and right now it doesn't look like anyone is watching out for it. Two hours of work will change that. It also matters downstream: everything sitting in that drainage way is one hard rain from Meadow Creek, and this stretch drains directly into it. Trash we pull out on October 3rd is trash that never reaches the water.
A heads up on the ground — expect uneven footing, brush, and a lot of broken glass. Long pants are strongly recommended, and we'll have a sharps container on site.
We provide all the equipment — grabbers, bags, gloves, and safety vests. Just bring clothes you don't mind getting a little dirty and comfortable closed-toe shoes. Bring water.
Every bag we pull off Commonwealth Drive is one the neighborhood doesn't have to walk past and one Meadow Creek doesn't carry down to the Rivanna. Come for the full two hours or come for one — every bag counts.
