Monticello Road & Moores Creek Cleanup

Join us as we clean up the Monticello Road corridor and the Moores Creek floodplain!

We'll meet at 1706 Monticello Rd, Charlottesville, VA 22902. Look for the CLP sign.

We're taking on three different jobs, so there's a place for everyone. We'll work the roadside and lot edges along Monticello Road and Mountain View Street. We'll clear the access road between Monticello Avenue and Monticello Road, where cans and bottles have been dumped in bulk — we'll sort aluminum from glass on site and take the recyclable material to the McIntire Recycling Center. And we'll clear two abandoned campsites down in the floodplain: one sitting low enough on the bank that the next high water takes it into the creek, and one holding down a patch of woods that can't grow back until it's out. Those two sites may contain hazardous material, so that work is for adults only — everyone else will be working the roadside and the container haul.

Kids are welcome with a parent or guardian.

This is a stretch of South Charlottesville that people walk, drive, and work in every day, and right now nothing about it says anyone is looking after it. Two hours changes that. It's also the last stop before the water — Moores Creek runs to the Rivanna and on to the James, so what's sitting on that bank is already halfway downstream. What we pull out on September 12th never gets there.

We provide all the equipment — grabbers, bags, gloves, and safety vests. Just bring clothes you don't mind getting a little dirty and comfortable closed-toe shoes. Long pants are a good call here, and bring water.

Thanks to the Rivanna Conservation Alliance for helping us secure site access and parking. We've pulled 243 bags of litter off Charlottesville streets and creek banks since late July — come help us add to it.
