Architecture of Flink's Streaming Runtime & Flink at Capital One

Please join us for another exciting evening to share knowledge and experience with our fast growing Chicago Apache Flink community.

The first talk by Robert Metzger, a Flink committer from Data Artisans presents Flink's architecture and design decisions that result in Flink's unique set of features. It discusses the pipelined execution engine for low latency processing, the operator state management and fault tolerance mechanisms. It will cover master high availability and system monitoring and also show a performance evaluation of the system.

The second talk by Srini Palthepu & Slim Baltagi will share the experiences and lessons learned while evaluating the capabilities of Apache Flink at Capital One for both Real-Time streaming and batch use cases.

Speakers Bios:

Robert Metzger (@rmetzger_ (https://twitter.com/rmetzger_)) is a Co-Founder and Software Engineer, at data Artisans. Robert Metzger is a PMC member at Apache Flink and co-founder and software engineer at data Artisans. Robert studied Computer Science at TU Berlin and worked at IBM Germany and at the IBM Almaden Research Center in San Jose.

Srinivas (Srini) Palthepu @SriniPalthepu (https://twitter.com/SriniPalthepu) has over 20 years of combined IT & Software Engineering experience in various roles including Research & Development, Production Delivery & Execution, Architecture and Strategy. He started Big Data journey before even the term Big Data was coined at a Chicago Startup Company recently acquired By IBM. In his current role at Capital One, Srini is leading Capital One’s new digital transformation of Partnership business with Big Data and Fast Data technologies. Srini is also co-organizer of Chicago Flink User Group Meetup. He has a Ph.D in Computer Science from University of Saskatchewan and double masters degrees in computer science and engineering.

Slim Baltagi (@SlimBaltagi (https://twitter.com/SlimBaltagi)) is currently director of Big Data engineering at Capital One. He has more than 18 years of IT and business experience and has spent the last four years of his life hadooping and more recently sparking and flinking! He has worked on more than 12 Big Data projects as a solution architect. He enjoys evangelizing about Big Data technologies and maintaining a Big Data Knowledge Base (http://www.sparkbigdata.com/): Hadoop, Spark, Flink, Mesos,...With some fellow squirrels, Slim also runs the Chicago Apache Flink Meetup, the Washington DC Area Apache Flink Meetup, the Boston Flink Meetup and the Paris Flink Meetup.
