learn about biochar--a great way to sequester carbon

Details
Interested in becoming a Pyroneer and to learn more about the game changing nature of Biochar and its ability to sequester carbon and incredibly increase the productiviety of your garden soil by creating your our Terra Preta at home? I will be holding a full day workshop on 10/13 from 10-4pm at my 'Energy Farm' in Watertown Wisconsin. This will be a hands on, outdoor workshop (no PowerPoints!) that will use actual wood and homebuilt stove to explain the theory, especially, the actual practice of turning waste wood into carbon sequestering bio-char or into useable heat in Rocket Stoves. We will be actively assembling and then burning the stoves and will be producing 20+ gallons of char during the workshop.
Topics covered while enjoying the crisp Fall air on the farm and getting our hands a bit dirty:
Background science of Biochar (learn what Pyrolosis means!)
Different BioChar Stove types -- Retort v. the 'TLUD'
Actually assemble and burn both a 'TLUD' and the 'SEC' (Simple, Effective and CHEAP) Retort Stove during the workshop
Learn how to build your own stove using locally available scrap parts-- AND NO WELDING
How to sustainably grow your own woody biomass for char production, or where to source wood locally
How to use BioChar in the Garden
While the workshop will be biased to the biochar stoves, we will also have 1 or more of the Jefferson Community Supported Energy groups famous Rocket Stoves on hand that have been featured at the MREA Energy Fair.
Rocket Stove Topics will include:
Rocket Stove theory and design
How to build your own stoves
Uses and modular design ideas.
If there is interest and the parts can be found, we hope to have materials on hand to allow attendees leave with their own 55gln Biochar Stoves (unassembled) for a fee- likely $75-$125 depending on design and materials cost-- if interested please include that in your registration email ASAP to allow for us to scrounge up the parts. Availability of parts will be very limited and will be first come first serve.
Finally, there is a very good chance that this workshop will be Co-Hosted by GREG DAVID, acclaimed Wisconsin Bioneer, Permaculuture Guru, and all around great guy.
The Workshop will be held in Watertown WI and Preregistration is required. Cost will be only $25 for the entire workshop, Lunch will be a BYOB affair, but grills cooking over locally made biochar and rockets stoves will be on hand to heat up any vittles you bring. Coffee and Tea will be availible. This is a RUSTIC outdoor event with limited facilities and no climate control.
