"Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) have become buzzwords for the tech industry as well as a mainstay of science fiction and popular culture. We will look at some of the historic progress made in the field as well as the philosophical suppositions that guide different approaches to AI. We will also question whether general purpose computer intelligence is as imminent as some suggest or whether it is an elusive goal perpetually averred as just around the corner."
