Show & Tell - August Occasion w/ Mark Rustad

Details

It’s time for another Show & Tell! It’s an opportunity to mingle, find collaborators, share what you've been working on, and learn a little bit. There is a lot happening in the community and this is the time for you all to shine!

We're trying a new format this month allowing time for individuals to show their work and talk about it in a more social way. The format will be like a Science Fair where you setup your project on a table and people circulate and check out the projects on display.

Anyone is welcome to setup a project for display at the Science Fair. We encourage you to show work that is in progress.

If you would like to give a formal presentation to the group apply here (http://bit.ly/pdxcc-signup). If we can't get you on stage this time we will try to next time.

6:30pm : Doors open

6:55pm : Greeting and announcements

7:00pm: Shipcycles Performance by Josh Michaels (http://www.jetsoncreative.com/)

7:10 pm: Futel (http://futel.net/) project presented by Karl Anderson

Part public service and part public art, Futel is keeping the payphone alive by installing them in public locations and offering free calls and interactive audio experiences. We feel that the constraints of the phone interface both spur creativity and pay homage to a generation of creative hackers.

7:40pm: Show & Tell Science Fair (everyone bring your laptop and show off what you're working on!)

8:20pm: PLATO (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PLATO_(computer_system)) discussion by Mark Rustad (https://www.linkedin.com/in/markrustad)

Creativity is unleashed when people interact together. The PLATO project pioneered an interactive graphical computing environment back in the 1970’s. The purpose of the system was education, but not only the students were learning! See how many current ideas had roots back in the 1970’s.

end - head to Burnside Brewing (http://www.burnsidebrewco.com/)

As always, thank you to Instrument (http://instrument.com) for providing the amazing space, and for sponsoring the refreshments. A reminder that they are hiring people who are a great fit for this group. Please check out their careers page and follow them on twitter @Instrument (http://twitter.com/instrument).
