March meetup - CrossR and rstudio::conf recap

Details
We're all set for a March meetup!
We'll be getting together on Wednesday March 6 from 5:30-7:00 (UVa Brown Science and Engineering Library Room 133) for a meetup featuring highlights from rstudio::conf in Austin this January. Several of our meetup members were able to attend, and they'll be giving a series of short presentations on takeaways and next-steps gleaned from the conference material.
We'll kick things off with an interactive activity led by Jeff Boichuk:
Inspired by Felienne Hermans' keynote at rstudio::conf(2019) on "Explicit Direct Instruction in Programming Education," Jeff Boichuk is developing CrossR, an R package that he hopes will help instructors (including himself) lead R Users through high-intensity interval training (HIIT) exercise sessions. These sessions will involve hands-on coding exercises aimed at helping R Users become more fluent with both the R programming language and RStudio's shortcuts. Jeff will lead us through the first ever session of CrossR, during which time we will write and execute simple lines of code repetitiously for 20-90 seconds at a time. So far, CrossR includes a `shortcuts` tibble that makes all of RStudio's shortcuts for windows and mac available and a `get_encouragement()` function that returns positive reinforcement, such as "There you go again, being excellent" to the R User. Come to the March meetup with CrossR installed by running the following code: `devtools::install_github("jeffboichuk/CrossR")`.
Following the CrossR session, we'll hear lightning talks on:
- gt (https://gt.rstudio.com/) - Marieke Jones
- Contributing to the tidyverse - Samantha Toet
- rayshader (https://github.com/tylermorganwall/rayshader) - Nathan Day
There was plenty of other great material presented at rstudio::conf (https://resources.rstudio.com/rstudio-conf-2019). Those of us who attended will do our best to answer any questions you all have about the conference!
Information regarding directions and parking for Brown Science and Engineering Library is available on the UVa Library website:
