API Craft Chicago June 2012 Meetup

Ifbyphone opens doors at 6:00pm for attendees to arrive, socialize, and hang out before meetups. We'll try for presentations to officially start by 7:00pm.

HTTP specification defined by RFC-2616 by Robert Allen Qt: A Framework You Should Know by Karen Heart Robert Allen is a technologist and Software Architect with Ifbyphone, Inc.; he began his software development career in 1997 working with many open source applications. He embraced web-services early with the advent of SOAP, implementing various distributed applications. This included satellite based web service using SOAP via SMTP/XMPP. Currently, at Ifbyphone, he and his colleagues are developing a new pragmatic API web-service for internal and external consumption. Robert is also the creator and maintainer of both a PHP Hal Serializer and a PHP Swagger Library.

Karen Heart, in addition to her many misadventures, Karen holds a Master of Science degree in Computer Science and teaches C++ at DePaul University. She has developed a wide range of software, including front end, middleware, and back end. Currently, she is developing a new type of system for software development, called DCS, and she has been using Qt for 7 months intensively for creating her prototype.

The API Craft Chicago Meet Up Group is proud to present at least two featured presentations about the hottest API topics each month. We have room for 30 people and all skill levels are welcomed.

Robert Allen will be presenting....HTTP specification defined by RFC-2616

While the HTTP specification defined by RFC-2616 preceded Roy Fielding's doctoral dissertation "Architectural Styles and the Design of Network-based Software Architectures" in 2000, many problems faced by web-service designers and implementers may be solved with an awareness of the toolkit provided by this specification. Topic will cover how developers may leverage RFC-2616 to solve everyday API design challenges.

Karen Heart will be presenting....Qt: A Framework You Should Know

17 years ago, Norwegian developers, Haavard Nord and Eirik Chambe-Eng, released a cross-platform GUI framework known as Qt. Over time it has grown to more than 5000 classes and been redistributed millions of times. Qt is supported on Windows, Linux, Mac, many cell phone OS'es, and embedded systems.

What is it like to develop an API using Qt? What challenges does it pose and how can they be met? These issues will be explored, using examples from the API that Karen Heart has developed using Qt, called DCS, the Distributed Contribution System.

All meetups will be in traditional API Craft Chicago fashion. No dress code, relaxed attitudes, open ideas, laptop encouraged, remember business cards, and we will probably go for a beer afterward.
