High Rollers by Martin Lowy is a book discussing the causes and workings of the Savings and loan crisis in the 80s. S&Ls used to be a predominant lending institution in the US providing mortgages, and typically doing so by riding the long-standing differences between the deposit interest rate and the lending interest rate.

Due to a number of economic factors (high fed interest rates & increased competition from full-spectrum banks), these associations collapsed in large numbers, and often did so dramatically due to special bankruptcy protections.
