Introduction to Scala for Java developers

Details

Due to a death in my family, I must postpone this presentation to the next meeting. So, the meeting is still on, but will be informal conversation.

So you (or one of your friends) is a Java developer, you've heard about Scala and you are curious what all the fuss might be about. If this is you, then grab your friend and please drop in for this informal presentation (there is a meeting room limit of 20, so please RSVP).

In this (very) short "Introduction to Scala for Java Developers" I will cover some of the reasons I have found myself to be significantly more productive and satisfied where I have replaced coding in Java with coding in Scala (as Scala can be an almost perfect drop in replacement to Java). As an added benefit, I picked up the newest over-hyped buzzword, "functional programming", by osmosis. And can now add it to my resume.

I'll be covering the basics of getting started with Scala:

• Eclipse IDE Bundle - Scala 2.10 + Scala Worksheet

• Books - I will bring those I have to the meeting so they can be perused, if you like

• Learning resources - ex: StackOverflow, Scala Koans, Bruce Eckel's "Atomic Scala", etc.

BTW, our host, Improving Enterprises", provides free pizza and sodas for anyone/everyone showing up. So, even if you only have a marginal interest in Scala, consider coming for a free lunch (or dinner for you early risers).
