Please join the Dallas Sierra Club as we welcome West Virginia's Vernon Haltom from Coal River Mountain Watch as he delves into his group's fight against mountaintop removal which is amongst the most destructive mining methods there are and is responsible for the decimation of vibrant communities and ecosystems across Appalachia. This relatively new type of coal mining occurs primarily in West Virginia, Kentucky, Virginia and Tennessee; and companies in Appalachia are increasingly using this method (where the tops of mountains are blown off with explosives subsequently dumping waste, dirt, and rocks – called mining spoil – into adjacent valleys and mountain streams) because it allows for almost complete recovery of coal seams while reducing the number of workers required to a fraction of what conventional methods require.
