Streaming microservices at Yolt (by ING)

Details

We’re excited to announce teaming up with the startup Yolt (under the ING umbrella) for our next Meetup! This event will cover streaming microservices using Kubernetes, Kafka and Cassandra.

Yolt (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgLHO0d3ABY) is about "unthinking money" by creating an app where consumers can aggregate their finances from multiple banks to get a better insight into their finances. It is one of the first companies utilizing open banking and Payment Services Directive 2 (PSD2).

Yolt has grown fast in number of users, over 300k at the moment, and number of employees, from 0 to 60+, in just a few years.
BigData Republic was involved from the start in building the Yolt data backend with Kubernetes, Cassandra, Kafka (streams), Scala and Java. When a user's bank transactions are ingested into Yolt, it triggers a stream of asynchronous microservices. These services enrich the transactions using data science models. Examples of these models are automatic categorization (e.g. bills, groceries), detecting merchants (e.g. Mc Donalds, Spotify) and predicting upcoming transactions (e.g. direct debits, automatic transfers).

In this talk we'll go over the data architecture of Yolt, explain our architectural decisions, the alternatives and their trade-offs.
We'll also explain the use and configuration of the open source tools and technologies so that they'll satisfy our main design goals: scalability, consistency, fault-tolerance and loose coupling in depth.
