We invite you to join us at our next in-person Meetup. We have exciting speakers Eric Lee and Byron Chu from Callysto Education Initiative who will be presenting on an important topic “Computational Thinking in the K-12 Classroom”. We hope you can attend!.

Callysto is an open source education initiative that helps Canadian Grade 5-12 teachers and students work with open data and develop analytical and computational thinking skills in the classroom. In this session we will look at the following things:

  • Technologies (including Jupyter Hub, Juptyer Lite, Jupyter Book)
  • Classroom resources
  • Learning approaches
  • Collaborations (including Data Dunkers)

Speaker's Bio: Byron has a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Calgary. Byron is interested in the intersection of data analysis and storytelling, and how numbers can inform everyday life, from networks, and the environment to health issues. Byron enjoys introducing new technologies and problem-solving approaches to teachers and students. If he's not at his desk, you will find him running or spending time with his family.

Speaker's Bio: Eric is currently studying for a Bachelor of Science at the University of Alberta and works on the Data Dunkers project. In addition to his studies, he has developed an AI gym web application that uses computer vision to track successful and unsuccessful repetitions of gym activities. While at Callysto, Eric enjoyed seeing others utilize the tools he developed. When he's not at his desk, he can often be found playing video games in his free time, particularly the Dark Souls franchise.
