Yevhen shares independent research on Calgary's urban landscape and microclimate, using satellite imagery and open data to reveal neighborhood-scale environmental risks. He'll walk through the full pipeline — from raw imagery to public impact — covering:

  • Google Earth Engine/R pipelines for Sentinel and Landsat imagery, land cover classification, and heat modeling
  • How this open-data work led to media coverage and formal City of Calgary recognition

Mapping Tree Canopy and Tree Equity in Calgary: Visualization and Analysis using Open Data

Calgary's average tree canopy is just 9% — as low as 2% in some lower-income neighborhoods. Saadiq shows how the Calgary Climate Hub combined open data, satellite imagery, and Census data to map tree equity and advocate for a greener, fairer city.
Saadiq is a Calgary Climate Hub volunteer with a civil engineering and computer science background; he now works in geospatial data at NASA's Office of Data Science and Informatics.
