Our next Data for good meetup has been set, and this will be a good one!

Join us at 6pm (Speakers start at 6:30) on January 16th to hear the United Way in Regina talk about how they help kids keep up their learning capacity during their critical development years.

Without giving away too much of their story, the United Way has identified that a child who is not reading at grade 3 level on time is 4x more likely to drop out of high school! There is a critical time in the summer after grade 3 where these kids can fall behind in their reading skills and then be left in the dark in Grade 4 onwards. This is called the summer slump. The UW has made some incredible headway into combating the summer slump. In this DfG Meetup, they are going to tell us how, what the results have been of the program and the data challenges they still face.

2nd Speaker Added!

Peter Kim from Pivot Legal in Vancouver (also runs the DfG chapter in Van) is going to be speaking about data in the fight for social justice. He has a great article listed below that talks about that. I won't give away too much more, but he is a smart dude and you are going to like his presentation.

Peter has fit us into his schedule, which we are grateful for! He will be on after the United Way, and will likely take the stage at about 7:15pm.
