Inaugural Seminar - A.I. in Speech.

We are pleased to announce our very first event will be taking place at the Toronto Rehab Institute.

At Data In Medicine, we aim to look at how data can be used to derive meaning and action in healthcare. Our very first speaker, Dr. Frank Rudzicz, will be giving us an overview of some of his research work in a seminar on:

"Machine Learning in Pathological Speech."

Speaker Bio: Dr. Frank Rudzicz is an international expert on speech technology for individuals with speech disorders. He is the President of the international joint ACL/ISCA special interest group on Speech and Language Processing for Assistive Technology and Young Investigator of the Alzheimer's Society.

His work involves machine-learning, human-computer interaction, speech-language pathology, rehabilitation engineering, signal processing, and linguistics. Contributions include the TORGO database of disordered speech (the first speech recognition system for people with speech disorders based on their physical speech articulation) and subsequent communication aid software that modifies the acoustics of hard-to-understand speech to make it more understandable to the typical listener.

He was also the technical lead of HitchBOT (www.hitchbot.me), in which he developed speech interaction software for a robot that hitchhiked across Canada, Germany, and (part of) the United States. This work was featured in various popular media including The Atlantic, the CBC, NBC, ABC, and the Toronto Star.
