DoKC Town Hall: Persistence at the Edge for Thousands of Chick-fil-A Restaurants

Details

We are the Data on Kubernetes Community (DoKC), where end users go to share best practices for running data workloads on Kubernetes.

We're excited to host our monthly DoKC Town Hall virtual event in August 2023! This is an event to bring the community together to meet each other, share end-user journey stories, DoK-related projects and technologies, and keep you up-to-date on community events and ways to participate. Meetings will be held on the third Thursday of each month at 10am PT.

Persistence at the Edge for Thousands of Chick-fil-A Restaurants
Presented by Brian Chambers, Chief Architect, Chick-fil-A

Kubernetes has become the dominant platform for scheduling cloud-based workloads. Did you know it is also being deployed outside of cloud and datacenter environments, at the Edge? Edge Computing is an emerging architecture pattern that puts workloads closer to end users to meet unique business requirements or drive exceptional user experiences. It brings compute to the data instead of bringing the data to the compute. In this session you will learn about how Chick-fil-A has been running Kubernetes in ~2,800 restaurants for the past 4.5 years. We'll answer the following questions... Why is this necessary and useful? What types of data are being used? What is our approach to persistence? What tradeoffs have we made between persistence guarantees and complexity of solution?
