Edison Thomaz: The Smart Home Dream as Data and Algorithms

Details

Talk Summary

For many decades, researchers and entrepreneurs have had visions of the smart home - a home that anticipates your every need and assists you with household tasks, from automatically playing music that matches your mood to reminding you to buy more milk on the way back from work. Needless to say, the vision of the smart home remains, well, a vision. Technically, one of the fundamental building blocks of the smart home dream is activity recognition. In this talk, I will present the state of the art in activity recognition for the home today, including methods used to collect data, characteristics of the data, and how the data is being visualized, annotated and analyzed.
