It is over 40 years ago when the idea of a single language was muted to embrace all programming task from low level to Enterprise. That language was Ada and in many ways proved to be a failure. In intervening years some other languages have been touted to assume the mantel but a general consensus is that the Philosopher's Stone of Programming is not possible.
In this talk Malcolm Sherrington will revisit the question looking at another candidate: Julia. Julia has incorporated many modern features of computer language design. That it (she?) creates 'quick' code is well known but there are a host of other features potentially more important to the software developer and data scientist. The talk will discuss these in some detail, together with providing actual examples of each, provide information on how to get started with Julia and argue that there as never been a better time to do so.
Malcolm Sherrington has been involved software development since the early 1980's, running his own systems consultancy in the USA, Italy and Germany as well as in the UK. The company has worked in aerospace, healthcare and finance, specialising on high-speed and real time computing. Malcolm is the founder and organiser of the London Julia User Group as well as being the author of the book "Mastering Julia".
And an announcement from TechExeter about an exciting upcoming project.
