Bio:
John Carney runs PDFTA a Data Science consultancy focused on Recommendation systems, Search Ranking, and Machine Learning in Production. He's a co-organiser of PyData Manchester, he got his Ph.D. thesis title is "Adapting UK winter wheat to predicted climate change scenarios", and he spends a lot of his time frustrated by the Seattle Seahawks and the New York Mets.

Abstract:
On most e-commerce sites when we search for a product we get a nice list of products, perhaps in the 'recommended' ordering. Why is this done? And more interestingly how? It turns out machine learning has a key role to play. John will be introducing some of the key concepts in learning to rank, how to use them in productions and some of their pitfalls.
