Virtual doors open: 17:30
Hello AI and DS enthusiasts!
We would like to invite you to another DS Rotterdam Meetup around Applied Data Science. Due to the current situation, we will be hosting this meetup online. Now, we know that this won’t be same (virtual pizzas are not as tasty), but we are hoping that you are up for a virtual take to our classic recipe!
This time, we will focus on AI in Agriculture, with presentations from two leading companies in the sector. We’ll top it off with a panel of experts to answer your questions (agriculture related or not!). Interested?
Please RSVP here and register to the webinar using the link provided.
Note that we have a limited number of spots available. So, if you can no longer make it, please let us know as soon as possible – that way we can assign your seat to someone on the waiting list.
PROGRAM
17:30 – 17:40: Brief introduction by your hosts
17:40 – 18:00: Talk 1
18:00 – 18:20: Talk 2
18:20 – 18:50: Panel Discussion
18:50 – 19:00: Closing remarks
TALKS
Blue Radix | Rudolf de Vetten & Bram van Rens | Can algorithms feed the world?
How can you capture the knowledge of a seasoned crop manager in algorithms? Many professionals in the horticulture sector believe this is impossible. Growing crops in a greenhouse requires “green fingers” that are not replaceable by algorithms. However, the expertise for growing crops is decreasing while the need for fresh food is increasing. Could algorithms feed the world? We use a layered approach that can be applied in other sectors as well to capture scarce expertise using multiple data science techniques. By combing optimization algorithms that include crop expertise with a data driven approach, we have been able to advice crop managers on the best decisions. And even fully control greenhouses autonomously.
Greenhouse management is a dynamic and complex business. Many highly variable factors like weather, energy costs, global market dynamics and availability of skilled personnel play a crucial role in selling a high-quality product, at the right time, at the right price. As Blue Radix, we apply smart algorithms to support the grower in these challenges.
Lely | Ingrid den Uijl & Dean Shabi | Predicting Dairy Production
Currently the dairy sector needs to produce sufficient and affordable food in a sustainable way regarding resource efficiency, environmental impact, and animal well-being. Automation is becoming more and more common at dairy farms, and the level of automation is ever increasing; milking and feeding robots, as well as tags yield an abundance of sensor data that when properly analysed can help improve cow management regarding resource efficiency and well-being. We will discuss application of data and AI in management of healthy cows and prediction of disease.
Ingrid’s background is in epidemiology, biostatistics, data science and veterinary science. She has worked in different fields, human health, academia, animal health and oil/gas, in applied data science. Currently, she is part of the smart components team at Lely focusing on turning data into fast, high quality information, adding value for everyone in the dairy system.
Panel Discussion
For the panel discussion, Guus van Heijningen and Dimitrios Gontzes will join the presenters of the day to answer any of your questions. Feel free to ask any questions: agriculture-related or more general AI-focused.
