Talk 1 : Using patent data and AI to predict the technological future.
Speaker : Jard van Ingen, GetFocus.
GetFocus built the world’s first technology forecasting platform, allowing R&D and innovation leaders to invest in winning technologies without the guesswork. GetFocus works with organizations like the US DoD, BASF, JLR, and Shell to forecast the technological future.”
Abstract : Harnessing AI to Predict the Next Technological Breakthroughs: Explore how AI can predict future technological breakthroughs by learning from historical disruptions like lithium-ion batteries and Kodak
Talk 2: AI and Trust: Who Holds Responsibility?
Speaker: Nicolas Dickinson, WASHNote
Nicolas Dickinson brings people together to use data to improve lives. As an evaluator, he examines outcomes, biases, and the human impact of technology and services. His multidisciplinary work combines technical expertise with organisational facilitation. Projects include linked data and knowledge exchange, analysing energy data from 300 Dutch households to assess heat pumps’ impact on grid congestion, evaluating water and sanitation programmes in Africa, supporting adoption of national statistical studies by multilateral agencies, and designing APIs for collaboration in the Dutch built environment.
Abstract: Online, there is a growing crisis of trust. AI startups often place responsibility on users, saying “we never claimed it was reliable”, while competing for market dominance. These fast-changing, opaque systems affect millions daily in the Netherlands and are difficult to fact-check. Some, like xAI’s chatbot, also reflect clear political positions. Experts increasingly argue that providers, not users, must ensure the integrity of outputs. This is a systemic and social issue.
As we all access data through these tools, is it enough to say that models are unreliable?
