Data Vis Talks – On the Edge

Details

When we visualise data, we mostly do so digitally and with a 2D experience as a result. All the lightning speakers of our next meetup challenge at least one of these ideas. So this time, we want to look beyond the horizon and ask: What can data vis be? Where are the borders? Where is the edge? Let's find out while having talks, drinks and discussions at Betahaus.

We're happy to have Stephan Thiel from Studio NAND with a 20min talk about the physical representation of data. Then we'll listen to four 10min talks: Catalina illustrates, Paul and Tobias translate data into objects and Sonja uses sound to understand (urban) landscapes better. Come and join us for this exciting October event!

----------------------------------------------------

Stephan Thiel

Stephan (@stphnthiel (https://twitter.com/stphnthiel)) is one of three partners at Studio NAND (http://www.nand.io/), a Berlin-based design agency focused on interaction design, data visualization, research and education, where he mainly oversees projects that make accessible knowledge to various audiences. This also includes coordinating activities for Start Coding, a non-profit in Germany dedicated to supporting learning in a digital age.
Outside of NAND, he enjoys working as a consultant to universities on data visualization in the Humanities and as an educator at organisations such as the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington D.C.
Stephan will talk about physical representation of data on the example of emoto, a data visualization artwork for the London 2012 olympics which Studio NAND created in collaboration with Moritz Stefaner and Drew Hemment (FutureEverything).

Paul Heinicker

Paul (http://paulheinicker.com)(@paulpunkt (http://twitter.com/paulpunkt)) is a Design Master student at the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam. He is interested in visual culture, how visual artefacts shape the way we see and understand our society, and the general intersection of design and humanities. In his talk he is presenting a little side project: A physical representation of data in the form of a wearable necklace.

Catalina Pérez López

Catalina (http://curiousvisualist.com/)(@qriousvisualist (http://twitter.com/qriousvisualist)) is a visual explainer and academic researcher from Colombia. Currently based in Berlin works as a freelancer making illustrations and taking pictures in order to elucidate stuff. All her work –despite of the media, has a content of didactic storytelling and when it comes to illustration she mainly focuses in infographics. In her talk Catalina will show a few ongoing "handmade visualisations” and explain the process she follows to communicate ideas using visual metaphors.

Sonja Heinen

Sonja (@sonjaheinen (https://twitter.com/sonjaheinen)) is a semi-nomadic visual designer interested in the space where technology, art and society collide. In October 2014 she earned a Master's in Sustainable Design from Kingston University in London and then relocated to Chunky Bac... Berlin. She currently works as a creative and developer advocate on a variety of projects and roams through the open source community. In her talk she will explain her project "Battersea Concert Park"; a critical design response revealing a rift between the visual and acoustic appearance of Battersea Park, SW11 4NJ, London. Using experiential data as a material for design outcomes, which stress the importance to include sound information in a holistic approach to urban planning. Furthermore, this project strives to heal the disconnection between humans and their natural environment by encouraging attentive listening.

Tobias Zimmer

Tobias (@tobiaszmr (http://twitter.com/tobiaszmr)) is a recent graduate of the Intermedia Design (http://www.intermedia-design.de/) programme at University of Applied Sciences, Trier, where he focussed on creative coding and physical computing. His main field of work is computer aided collection, processing and visualization of data in the broadest sense. He will talk about his bachelor thesis Food Data (http://food-data.tumblr.com/), in which he analyzed and processed breakfast crumbs to create ceramic plates with applied generative artworks.

Two more notes: If you're organising an event related to data (vis), please announce it in the comments or come to the event and talk shortly about it there. We won't send out emails about external events to our members.

If you want to be a speaker at one of the following events or if you have any other comments/ideas, please write me: lisacharlotterost@gmail.com! I like emails.

We really hope you can make it. Don't miss it!
