From Prompt to Production: Agentic LLM-Driven Algorithm Design as the Next Step in Data Engineering

We're thrilled to host👩‍💻 Niki van Stein, PhD. She is a researcher in the Natural Computing Group of The Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science (LIACS) and manager of the applied data science lab. Her research interest are in automated machine learning, global (Bayesian) optimization and neural architecture search. Next to her research, Niki has founded several software solution-oriented companies such as Van Stein & Groentjes – Custom software development, and Smartnotation – the smart meeting minutes application. What will Niki focus on?
AutoML has made model selection and hyperparameter tuning largely automatic, but designing the algorithm itself (the optimizer, heuristic, preprocessing pipeline or solver logic) has remained a highly manual, expert-driven task. In this talk, I'll show how large language models in combination with evolutionary computation can take over that job: generating, mutating, and evolving working algorithm code to solve concrete optimization and machine learning problems, from scheduling to classification pipelines to shape engineering.
