The first part of the session will feature a discussion between Abe Gong (Founder of Superconductive) & Pete Soderling (Founder of Data Council) and will cover topics you should consider when starting your data practice, such as:
Staffing: Which roles should you hire for first? What’s the difference between a data scientist and a data engineer?? What are common pitfalls to avoid?
Tools & Infrastructure: What are some of the standard components in a modern data engineering architecture? How do these differ from enterprise systems from the past? Which pieces should your company build vs. buy?
Workflow: How does a data team produce insights more efficiently? How does it scale? What are the trade-offs between building ad-hoc tools vs. fully automated systems?
In the 2nd half of the session, we’ll open up the discussion to questions from attendees where our speakers will offer insights on their specific issues.

About Abe Gong:
Abe Gong is the Founder and CEO at Superconductive, and a core contributor to the Great Expectations open source library. Prior to Superconductive, Abe was Chief Data Officer at Aspire Health, a founding member of the Jawbone data science team, and a lead data scientist at Massive Health. Abe has been leading teams using data and technology to solve problems in health care, consumer wellness, and public policy for over a decade. Abe earned his PhD at the University of Michigan in Public Policy, Political Science, and Complex Systems. He speaks and writes regularly on data, healthcare, and data ethics.

About Pete Soderling:
As a former software engineer, serial founder and investor in data-backed startups, Pete’s passion is in building valuable resources and community for data scientists, engineers, analysts and product managers. He is currently the founder & CEO of Data Council. Previously Pete founded Hakka Labs (a social network for software engineers), Stratus Security (an early cloud-based enterprise API platform) and mechanikal (a software development consultancy in NYC). A graduate of New York University, Pete has served as a mentor for 500 Startups, has been a TEDx, O’Reilly Strata and QCon speaker and has worked with technical founders across the globe.
