About Transition Toronto
Transition Toronto is the Toronto Chapter of the global Transition Movement, which envisions a socially-just future in urban environments across the world. Their organization works with community partners to facilitate data-driven climate resilience decision-making in urban communities.

The Project
The first prerequisite to facilitating data-driven climate resilience is having climate data, of which the Canadian Open Government Portal has plenty (over 38,000 datasets). Transition Toronto is planning to collect datasets from the Open Government Portal in alignment with their Climate Resilience Framework, which defines climate indicators across 4 domains:

1. Natural Environment
2. Built Environment, Physical Infrastructure, Networks, and Services
3. Society and Governance
4. Climate Risks and Systems

Transition Toronto is looking to our creative and multi-disciplinary Data for Good volunteers to develop solutions to automate the selection and sorting of the Open Government Portal datasets into these 4 domains. Relevant skills include:

• Content analysis
• Web scraping and API’s
• Familiarity with the Canadian Open Government Portal
• Natural language processing (NLP)
• Other modeling and classification methods

Volunteers are encouraged to design prototypes or architectures to automate some (or all!) of the database selection process. These can include ways to effectively query the Open Government Portal, collect textual data from portal web-pages, assign databases to a domain(s), and more.

DataThon Schedule

• 6:00 - 6:10 PM: Data for Good introduction
• 6:10 - 6:30 PM: Transition Toronto project brief and tutorial
• 6:30 - 7:45 PM: Volunteers work in Breakout Rooms
• 7:45 - 8:45 PM: Volunteer groups present their solutions to Transition Toronto*
• 8:45 - 9:00 PM: Closing remarks and uploading presentations

*Presentations may be recorded for future review by Transition Toronto, given prior consent from each volunteer team.
