Hey Data Do-Gooders! DataKind Bangalore is back. This time with a pilot in what will be a series of events dedicated to Open Data Discovery and Exploration: Datathon v1.0!

We aim to host a Datathon as a weekend-long, marathon-style event where teams of volunteers work together to help gather, munge, and explore open data available in a specific public sector.

The theme of this Datathon is “Primary Education in India”. We hope to make members of the community active participants and more aware of the gaps and discrepancies that exist with respect to Open Data in the Primary Education Sector. We’re not only excited about the open-endedness of this but also about the endless possibilities and solutions that can be introduced for this sector.

The Datathon model will encompass three phases:

Discovery: Scour the web to identify various data sources currently available in the public sector.

Extraction: Mine and munge the identified data sources and collate samples.

Analysis: Delve deeper into the data, evaluate existing problem statements and propose solutions.

Skills required for the Datathon:

Discovery: Googling, Ducking, Binging (if you are into that kind of stuff).

Extraction: Online extractors or scraping via language of choice.

Analysis: Any programming language/tool that can be used for data analysis.

Please register through the following link as we require these details to make necessary arrangements for the event and to help us deliver a better experience: https://goo.gl/forms/UGgrkEd5QFLA16tt2

FAQs

Unlike a hackathon, the goal is not (necessarily) to create an app. Instead it is to work with teams of experts to understand a truly difficult problem through data. You could end up with a visualization, an analysis, some graphs, or even just some new datasets by the end of the event, and all of those are fantastic results!

We do not assign you to a problem. We want you to work with the problem and data you feel most passionate about, so come with an open mind and be ready to learn.

You do not have to stay the entire weekend to participate in the event. We hope that you will find a project you can dig into, but you are always welcome to come and go as you please.

We do not provide any hardware or software for you to use. You should bring your own laptop and come ready to use whatever data tools you like.

Preparations for lunch will be made on our behalf.

Can't wait to see you all there!
