Woohoo! Here we go again!

We're excited to invite you to the DataKind DC chapter's latest (and sixth) weekend DataDive--a weekend-long event to get hands-on with mission-driven organizations' data to carve out some insights and build new possibilities for action.

We'll work on hard problems that matter, with great organizations that know them best, using good data and good questions prepared in advance with lots of other good people! Good fun, yeah?

A DataKind DataDive needs people with a wide range of skills working with data including data scientists, developers, designers, visualizers, communicators, and project managers. Basically, we want YOU!

Join us for a full day (9:30 AM - 9 PM) on Saturday March 25 and a half day wrap-up and presentation on Sunday March 26 (10:30 AM to 1 PM). You can attend one or both days. On Saturday, we'll learn about the projects then dive into the data! On Sunday morning, we'll wrap up the final presentations and show the world what you have done with the data.

Bring a laptop, roll up your sleeves, and get ready to make friends, build skills, and collaborate with other volunteer data science professionals and enthusiasts.

We've identified promising projects in need of help from data science volunteers like yourself. You'll get introduced to some fascinating mission-driven organizations. Most of the day will be dedicated to asking questions to these organizations about their data and doing hands-on work in data structuring, analysis, and visualization--so yes, bring your laptop! (And we should have something for both beginning and professional data science folks to work on.)

Check out our project statements below!

Catholic Charities- I want to use {the US Census, American Community Survey, and other housing data group estimates} to {create a model of the presence of acutely vulnerable populations such as uninsured (homeowners or renters), homeless or subsidized renters at the local level} so that {Catholic Charities USA can have a map to better target mitigation, preparedness, relief, and recovery projects supporting these communities} in order to {best serve communities that are both at greatest risk for disasters and most overlooked and/or outright excluded from federal assistance during disasters}.

Kiva- I want to use {loan, lender and borrower data} to {explore things like predicting which loans/borrowers are at risk of default, what factors contribute to credit risk, how loans can be restructured to avoid default, and why some borrowers' profiles get funded and others don't} so that {Kiva can work to improve their practices} so that {microfinance grows and succeeds}.

Freedom House-
We would like to organize and visualize the Freedom House Analysis division's 11 years of public but disparate Freedom in the World index and 30 sub-indicator data
BY building an open tool to make the historical data easier to access, review, and compare
IN ORDER TO help human rights organizations, both funded by Freedom House and not, around the world discover and make better use of this data to compare their countries scores and indicators to neighboring countries
IN ORDER TO put pressure on their governments to improve governance, rule of law, and human rights around the world.

Global Financial Integrity (GFI) -
Global Financial Integrity would like to use global trade data sets from the U.S., Japan and 28 European countries to identify when goods are mis-invoiced entering and leaving developing countries so that customs departments in those nations can curtail this practice in order to collect more revenue to promote economic development and alleviate poverty.
