DataDive - In Person at Georgetown University

Details

Introduction
On Saturday, October 22, DataKind DC is partnering with Georgetown University Data Science and Analytics Masters program to host our first Data Dive in over two and a half years, and we couldn’t be more excited to see you all again (or meet the many of you who may be new to volunteering with DataKind)!

What’s a DataDive?
A DataDive is a hackathon-style event where volunteer data scientists (or anyone interested in data science) partner with mission-driven organizations to work on a data project that helps the organization’s programming and the communities they serve. At this event, we plan to have projects with Starting With Today, Save the Children, Education for Employment, and GET Cities: Chicago. You can find summaries of each project as they are developed here, and more information about each project will be presented at the start of the event. Volunteers will then be able to choose which of the projects sounds like the best fit for them to work on for the day. As always, DataKind events are completely free to attend!

Who comes to a DataJam?
You do! Anyone with an interest in using data for good is welcome! And if you’re on this page that’s you :) DataKind DC chapter leaders and core volunteers will also be in attendance.

Where and when is it?
The DataDive will be held at Georgetown University’s Healey Family Student Center Social Room from 9:30am-5pm. The schedule for the day is as follows:
- 9:30am – Volunteers arrive; bagels and coffee served. There will be a sign in sheet that asks you to agree to DataKind's volunteer agreement, which you can read in advance here.
- 10:15am – Introductions to DataKind and the individual projects
- 11:00am – Begin work on projects for two-hour morning session
- 1:00pm – Lunch is served
- 2:00pm – Resume work on projects for two-hour afternoon session
- 4:00pm – Regroup to present progress made throughout the day and next steps
- 5:00pm – Event ends

What to Bring
Just yourself, your ideas, your collaborative spirit, and ideally a laptop. We’d love to see you there!

How to Sign Up
Just RSVP yes on this Meetup page! Please only RSVP if you really plan to attend, as we will use the numbers to estimate how much food to order.

Getting There
The event is located in the Social Room in the Healey Family Student Center. The entrance is on the NW side of the building - this is where Google Maps will take you when putting in the address. The Social Room is located in the back corner of the building; there will be signs, and the front desk will be able to direct you as well. There is limited parking available at the Leavey Center parking garage (entrance from Reservoir Road NW). There is also limited street parking, but ride share or bus is recommended. Alternative public garages are located at 1080 Wisconsin Ave NW and 3307 M St NW.

About DataKind DC
DataKind DC is an all-volunteer chapter of DataKind. DataKind brings high-impact organizations together with leading data scientists to use data science in the service of humanity. From one-hour events to year-long engagements, we have designed programs that enable data scientists and social changemakers to address tough humanitarian challenges together. Our work helps organizations develop evidence-based decision-making, increase efficiency, and enhance their data literacy. It also introduces data scientists to the Data-for-Good movement and shows them how valuable their skills can be.

About Georgetown Data Science and Analytics
The Georgetown DSAN Master's program focuses on equipping students with the skills to combine computational, mathematical, and statistical methodology with exceptional communication skills and creativity. We believe that true data scientists make a difference in the world by building a bridge between data and striving toward a better world.

Getting Involved if You Can't Make It
If you’re interested in these projects, but can’t make the DataDive, there will be opportunities to get involved in continuing work after the event (remotely, as well)! Please join our Slack at dkdc.herokuapp.com where we will make announcements.
