What we’re about
Calling all data do-gooders: come rub elbows and throw high fives with DataKind’s community of top data scientists and social sector leaders working to tackle the world’s toughest problems with data science. Are you a data scientist by day hankering to use your data prowess to find new insights, grapple with the most pressing social issues of our time and rub elbows with inspiring mission-driven organizations? Join us for one of our Project Accelerator Nights and in just a few hours you’ll have the chance to make a difference where we gather some of the city’s best mission-driven organizations with their questions about how to leverage data in the service of their cause. Do you work for an organization doing good in the world? Are you struggling with how to use data to further your cause? Want to get on-the-spot counsel and ideas from people who work with data for a living? Bring your questions about how to use ‘big data’ and new sources of information to this gathering of top-notch data scientists and get on-the-spot advice for your organization. Plus, hear inspiring presentations on learnings from our DataCorps and DataDive work with great organizations like Grameen Foundation, DC Action for Children, NYC Parks Department and The World Bank. All that and, we provide the beer! Want to learn more?

See all- DataDive! - In Person at George Washington UniversityGeorge Washington University, Washington, DC
Introduction
On Saturday, September 20th, DataKind DC is partnering with George Washington University to host a DataDive! We couldn’t be more excited to see you all again (or meet the many of you who may be new to volunteering with DataKind)!
What’s a DataDive?
A DataDive is a hackathon-style event where volunteer data scientists (or anyone interested in data science) partner with mission-driven organizations to work on a data project that helps the organization’s programming and the communities they serve. We will announce the project partners we'll be working with closer to event along with more information about each project. At the event, volunteers will then be able to choose which of the projects sounds like the best fit for them to work on for the day. As always, DataKind events are completely free to attend!
Who comes to a DataDive?
You do! Anyone with an interest in using data for good is welcome! And if you’re on this page that’s you :) DataKind DC chapter leaders and core volunteers will also be in attendance.
Where and when is it?
The DataDive will be held at George Washington University’s University Student Center ballroom. To get to the ballrooms take the elevator in the University Student Center to the 3rd floor and you will see both ballrooms across the hallway. The DataDive will run from 9:30am-5pm. The schedule for the day is as follows:
- 9:30am – Volunteers arrive; bagels and coffee served. There will be a sign in sheet that asks you to agree to DataKind's volunteer agreement, which you can read in advance here.
- 10:00am – Introductions to DataKind and the individual projects
- 10:45am – Begin work on projects for two-hour morning session
- 1:00pm – Lunch is served
- 1:45pm – Resume work on projects for two-hour afternoon session
- 4:00pm – Regroup to present progress made throughout the day and next steps
- 5:00pm – Event ends
What to Bring
Just yourself, your ideas, your collaborative spirit, and ideally a laptop. We’d love to see you there!
How to Sign Up
Just RSVP yes on this Meetup page! Please only RSVP if you really plan to attend, as we will use the numbers to estimate how much food to order.

About DataKind DC
DataKind DC is an all-volunteer chapter of DataKind. DataKind brings high-impact organizations together with leading data scientists to use data science in the service of humanity. From one-hour events to year-long engagements, we have designed programs that enable data scientists and social changemakers to address tough humanitarian challenges together. Our work helps organizations develop evidence-based decision-making, increase efficiency, and enhance their data literacy. It also introduces data scientists to the Data-for-Good movement and shows them how valuable their skills can be.
