Improving Indian Railways data in Wikidata and Openstreetmap

Details

Project on Indian Railways data, in Wikidata and Openstreetmap combined. See this forum post for info and updates:
https://groups.google.com/d/msg/datameet/imBhXjArgRA/b_ZLaN-OCgAJ

Focus work items :

  1. Improving tagging, mapping of Railway stations on OpenStreetMap.org
  2. Cleaning collected data on Indian Railways to facilitate bulk import to OSM and Wikidata

There will be a short intro session by Nikhil VJ and Manjusha Joshi, followed by hands-on work.
Participants are requested to bring their laptops fully charged, at least one laptop per 2 people.

Event is free and open to all to join, even kids who are comfortable with computers can join. But the hosts reserve the right to ask you to leave if they find you just doing timepass or disturbing others.

Note: If your laptop runs out of battery in short time, then you have to bring an extension cord / power strip along so that others don't have to compete with you for limited plugpoints. The venue is a normal classroom, not a lab.

OpenStreetMap.org : (OSM in short) the open-source, peoples alternative to google maps where you can download any and all map data without any permission/licensing problems. Screenshot is from OSM's query engine, Overpass Turbo

Wikidata.org : Offshoot from wikipedia, data here is properly attributed, interlinked and both human machine readable. Wikidata is being used to hold precise information which is later used to populate tables in Wikipedia articles, etc.
