Description:

This will be an introduction to R in a guided seminar style---we'll punctuate 20 minute lessons on key R topics (like data management, simple time series modeling, and graphics), with Q&A periods where we can walk through your questions in an office-hours format. Please feel free to bring your own projects and questions, or an empty text editor. For those on the regular Open Source Statistics mailing list---this is a good thing to forward to any of your friends who've been asking you how to get started in R.

Schedule:

  • First session (20 minutes):

Installation help, basic introduction to R data types and indexing syntax, how to download packages, how to access help and vignettes, built-in data sets, function creation, basic modeling with linear regression.

  • Workshop (20 minutes)

  • Second session (20 minutes)

Deeper look into linear and logistic regressions, how to do simple statistical tests, data management introduction through time series using xts. This session will be motivated by a forecasting problem modeling unruly airline passengers.

  • Workshop (20 minutes)

  • Third session (20 minutes)

How to make useful plots, helpful plotting templates in both base R graphics and ggplot2. We'll cover histograms, generic bar graphs, box and whisker, and time series plots with multiple axes.

  • Workshop (20 minutes)
