ML Pub Club #22: Superhuman Planning with LLMs

Details
What happens when a chess champion meets cutting-edge AI? Join us for an evening with Matej Jusup, as he unpacks how large language models (LLMs) can go from chatting to checkmating at grandmaster level. 🧠♟
From his time at Google DeepMind, Matej will share how he co-developed the first LLM to achieve grandmaster-level play in chess, chess960, and Hex.
He’ll walk us through how combining LLMs with search-based planning unlocks near-superhuman strategic reasoning, and how this goes far beyond games, with implications for real-world decision-making.
Matej is finishing his PhD at ETH Zürich, where he works on scalable multi-agent systems: from repositioning fleets of autonomous agents to optimizing smart grids. He’s also a former Quantitative Researcher at Morgan Stanley and led data science projects in credit scoring and marketing. Oh, and did we mention he is also a Croatian Junior Chess silver medalist. 🥈
