Details
How did the people of Canterbury enjoy themselves? The Church took a dim view of pleasure and especially that of a sexual nature and tried to restrain it. The court records tell a different story with frequent references to drunkenness, debauchery and fornication. Puritans regarded pleasure as the gateway to sin, but famously the people of the city rose up in rebellion against them in 1648. Theatre-going became wildly popular in Elizabethan times and later, organised sports like football, cricket and swimming took off. This Timewalk will take you through 10 centuries of leisure and pleasure in the city
