Starting at the famous Crooked House in Palace St we will explore the medieval suburb of Northgate with St John’s Hospital and its pubs, theatres and brothels catering to the needs of the soldiers stationed nearby. We will then visit the house of Sudan War hero,Thomas Byrne VC and hear the story the last cavalry charge of the British Army. In Military Rd we can see the surviving relics of the huge Victorian Barracks and the medieval Conduit House which supplied fresh water to the monks of the Cathedral. We return to the city via Barton Mill and the Riverside walk. 1.8 miles
