Liberated Canterbury Women

Most people today believe that it was the Suffragettes who won the vote for women. The historical reality is much more interesting and surprising. If not the Suffragettes, who or what really were responsible for liberating women? The answers may not be what you might expect.

This 1.5 mile walk will start at Canterbury Prison where some suffragettes were incarcerated and forcibly fed. We will look at twelve important, famous, and not so famous, women in the city’s history and role they played in its story.
These will include: Queen Bertha, Alice Ye Prostitute, Aphra Behn, Elizabeth I and Edith Swan-neck
