Spoonbill Season at Fellsmere Stick Marsh & Lunch at the Historic Marsh Landing
Details
Total Area: .92 acres uplands, 1.55 acres water
Focal Species: Roseate spoonbills, great egret, snowy egret, tricolored herons, anhinga
Stick Marsh CWA includes two tree islands in the St. John’s Water Management Area’s Stick Marsh/Farm 13 Reservoir in Fellsmere, west of Vero Beach. Hundreds of state-imperiled roseate spoonbills and tricolored herons join snowy and great egrets to nest from January to July each year. At sunset, thousands of wading birds fly into the islands to roost.
This is followed by a Florida Book Shop and quaint artifacts store for a short visit before lunch.
Stick Marsh CWA is adjacent to T.M. Goodwin Wildlife Management Area, a site along the Great Florida Birding Trail. It is easily viewed from shore.
Why so early?
"If you wait until 10 am you miss a lot, the changing light, the active birds, the UV's are strongest, and often the winds are picking up without warning, forming white caps. Best times are early morning, when the waters are likely to be calmer.
taken from the book Reflections of Blue Cypress, Richard and Juanita Baker, Ph.D.
You can bring a folding chair along for the two hour viewing portion in the morning. Photographers usually stand and their are some benches but a chair might be more convenient.
