In the 1930's, Grantlant Rice, a leading sports writer, called the Dora Canal “the most beautiful mile of water in the world” and you may also embrace these thoughts after seeing the beauty of the Dora Canal. As part of the Oklawaha River system, the Dora Canal is a natural stream connecting Lake Eustis to Lake Dora. Surveyors named Lake Dora in honor of a young woman who allowed them to camp on her homestead and gave them meals. The canal, originally known as ‘Elfin River’, was eventually changed to Dora Canal. In the late 1800's the waterway became the mainstay of commerce for the area bringing supplies and mail to the region. Sightseeing steamers also plied the waters bringing visitors from Palatka and Orlando. One visitor was quoted as saying, “Floating down the Elfin River on a moonlit night is like a trip into an enchanted fairyland...the beauty of the stream is unexcelled.” The preservation of the canal was assured when, in 1938, the Wilson Cypress Company was logging the area and were eventually persuaded to leave the cypress along the canal alone and deed a small strip of land surrounding the canal to the county. In 1957, additional land was given by several ecology-minded forefathers with the stipulation that it be preserved and maintained in its natural state. The Dora Canal is part of the history of Lake County. The ancient cypress trees with their lofty osprey nests, turtles sunning themselves on logs, egrets and the occasional alligator or two, lend themselves naturally to the incomparable beauty of the Dora Canal.
