We gather every Sunday weather and host availability permitting in the back yard, for 90 minutes of daytime disco.
Starting a couple of months into the pandemic I have been dancing in the back yard with other like minded people. This scratches several of my itches. It enables a mind body connection, motion, love of music, nature, and outdoors, and sharing music and all the above with others. We are no longer in pandemic mode, which is why it started outdoors, but I like the event and outdoor movement so much that it continues on.
The musical genre is loosely *Daytime Disco*, an "invention" of the group Poolside, and their song Feel Alright is a staple on the playlist, occurring frequently. Daytime Disco is a bit more mellow than an indoor, evening playlist, not as mysterious as an outdoor nighttime dance, and is interesting to me how it has evolved to fit the venue and time frame. Not as "anthemy", no circles on the "floor" while people show off moves, but more of a sharing space, groove, and nature. And sunshine.
The songs range from pop, funk, worldbeat, synth, swing, no alternative, soul, to psycho hillbillyjam Buddhist-agra jazz swing, or post disco NYC Black reggae nightclub with Josephine Baker era French dancehall accordion tango, and features a fair amount of covers, and newer material inspired by KRCL and KZMU. Starting time is dictated by the season, and we go for 90 minutes. One of the beauties of this format is that you can stroll in at any point, and leave at any time. There is no set starting point, per se. People have taken a break from other tasks and joined in for 15 minutes for a break, and then left. I joke that there is a two song minimum.
One thing that happens to me is that my mind wanders, and I get inspired. One of my inspirations that came to fruition last year was an overhead sound system that is up all year round so I don't have to haul it in and out every time.
All ages welcome, but this is mostly for adults. Children (18 and under) must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian who is a member of Meetup. Average age is currently 62.
