What we’re about
The group started and slowly grew as a place where young children could play with each other in the wonderful (yes, it means full of wonder) outdoors surrounding Santa Cruz, CA with as little supervision as possible. The idea was to let children interact with each other and nature in their own way and at their own pace with adults being present but staying back and away as far as possible, trying not to initiate contacts with children and even discouraging them by being those boring grown ups, who don't like loud noise and can't appreciate the excitement of endlessly throwing rocks or pointing out every Poison Oak plant.
Both moms and dads are welcome. The amount of supervision, sure, depends on what parents consider "safe enough" and varies widely. Luckily with more nature experience our children get more room to play and be children. Now we have a cohort of teens, who grew up with the program. They serve as role models for younger children.
There is more info about the group's philosophy in this article: http://khaimovich.name/DBTC_presentation.pdf .
