The DC Atheist Meetup is a project of DC Region Atheists. We are an educational and philosophical group serving Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia that fosters and advances the growth of non-religious communities by providing both a social setting and forums to discuss intellectual topics pertinent to their concerns and by working with other like-minded groups. We educate and encourage critical thinking through rational and respectful dialog between our members and others.
DC Region Atheists is a chapter of the Washington Area Secular Humanists. WASH is a non-profit 501c3 organization with all contributions being tax deductible. Contributions are very much encouraged and can be made here: join.

Secular Zoom Community
·OnlineOnlineTo all new people, our group is against Christian nationalism. Christian zoom bombers invaded our meetings until we were required to vet everyone who attends. Directions about how to get vetted are included after our meeting details below.
Our nation saw Biden in obvious decline in 2024. How is it possible for people to not see Trump losing the tiniest semblance of any reasonable connection with reality now? Is our current situation not far worse than anything that happened with Biden’s decline? A nation cannot function with chaotic dementia as the random, whim laden defining property of its leadership. We went to war because Netanyahu talked him into a grossly illegal war of choice with no immanent threat. He made the preposterous claim that Iran was two weeks from having a nuclear weapon. This was after claiming complete obliteration of the nuclear facilities and his intelligence services saying that there is no Iranian effort to build a bomb. There is no evidence that he even knew that everyone in that region knew that the Straight of Hormuz would be closed with massive consequences to the entire world economy. It is not just fuel. We might not have the fertilizer required to feed people. And the Defense Department wants $200 billion for anther possible forever war after Trump promised to never getting us in one.
Trump’s dementia means that his fantasy world of negotiations in progress is much more than a doddering old man making up stuff to pretend that his blundering has not placed us and the rest of the world in a crisis situation. There is near zero chance that there is any “15 points of agreement.” The pretense that Iran is negotiating was sufficient for Trump to back away from a threatened disastrous war crime. His threat to bomb civilian energy supply would be followed by Iran destroying needed infrastructure like desalinization plants in neighboring countries. Insider trading worth billions spiked in the stock and oil futures markets minutes before the fake claims of promising negotiations.
The TSA lines are getting out of control. Adding ICE agent cannot help because they have no training to operate the systems. Progress was being made on a deal to fund the system. Trump then shuts down that effort with a demand that Democrats agree to pass his voter suppression bill. Since that cannot happen, the Republican party is now being correctly blamed for the shutdown that has no end in sight.
After not informing our allies about going to war, insulting them, threatening to take Greenland by force, applied arbitrary tariffs, and dismissing prior sacrifices by NATO allies, Trump is now demanding that they help with Hormuz. They know the war is in violation of international law and has no reasonable plan for ending. They realize we are being led by a fool and they want no part of it.
Many measures of American democracy are collapsing. The Century Foundation has an excellent overview on some of those indexes. Their democracy meter fell from 79 to 57. A summary comment, “The U.S. government has become authoritarian in its intentions and its practices, even if it cannot always achieve its authoritarian goals.”
Will democracy and science and reason survive? We will see. We will cherish and support each other as we cope with these never ending tidal waves of madness. Let’s connect and share our thoughts on how to find our joy and nurture it in others until sanity returns.

Our meetings have become a target for organized zoom bombing. Our major topic of discussion has been Christian nationalism and its hideous impacts across America. They have good reason to try to force us to stop our meetings. This requires us to work to preclude militant religious extremists from wrecking our meetings.
We will not post the zoom link for our meeting. The zoom link information will be delivered by email or direct personal messaging to trusted attendees only. I am now comfortable that this procedure works well enough so that a zoom waiting room will not be required.
I have a Google Voice phone number, (202) 643-4366. I do not answer calls to that number. But it does an excellent job of transcribing messages. People can use this number to verbally describe items requested in a possible email below.
