David Fitzgerald is an atheist author, historical researcher, international speaker, and novelist—best known for his work at the intersection of secular scholarship, history, and mythicism. He’s dedicated over two decades to investigating the Historical Jesus question and scrutinizing religious origins through a critical, evidence-based lens. Fitzgerald has written several influential works. He penned Nailed: Ten Christian Myths That Show Jesus Never Existed At All, which challenges conventional narratives about Jesus. He followed it with Jesus: Mything in Action and the widely praised Complete Heretic’s Guide to Western Religion series, including volumes on Mormonism. His most recent project is Playing God: An Evolutionary History of World Religion—a sweeping historical survey tracing how global religions emerged, evolved, and intertwined through archaeological and textual revelations. A fervent atheist activist, Fitzgerald co-founded San Francisco’s first Atheist Film Festival and Evolutionpalooza (the city’s oldest Darwin Day celebration). He served on boards for San Francisco Atheists and the Center for Inquiry–SF, helped launch the Godless Perverts Story Hour, and organized events for numerous secular and freethought organizations. As a speaker, he’s been invited to universities (including Stanford and UC Berkeley) and secular conferences around the world. He’s appeared on podcasts, contributed to Slate and American Atheists Magazine, and was an associate member of the now-defunct Committee for the Scientific Examination of Religion. Beyond his non-fiction, Fitzgerald co-authored the Time Shards science-fiction trilogy (Titan Books UK) with his wife, Dana Fredsti. After 30 years in the Bay Area, they now reside in Eureka, Northern California. In Playing God, Fitzgerald extends his mythicist approach beyond Christianity to map the evolutionary paths of world religions—bringing fresh archaeological findings and skeptical insight to broad audiences keen on understanding religion’s origins and transformations.
