Abstract:

Agile practices are fundamentally changing the way wars are fought and business is done by the U.S. Department of Defense. The nature of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan has reshaped how the military thinks and organizes itself to fight on a modern battlefield. Defense contractors have also had to fundamentally shift how they work after Agile practices were written into procurement law in 2010. The evolution on the battlefield and in the boardroom has not been easy, but results are now beginning to bear fruit. JJ Sutherland, who as a war corresppondent for NPR spent years in the field with US troops, and as a Scrum consultant and trainer has worked with numerous Defense Contractors, will present how the Agile revolution has transformed the Defense landscape.

Bio:

JJ is the Chief Content Officer of Scrum Inc. and the co-author, with Jeff Sutherland, of Scrum: The Art of Doing Twice the Work in Half the Time. He helms Scrum Inc.'s mission driven content practice through books, papers, articles, and online. His work, through content, consulting, training, and public appearances, is to spread Agile knowledge and practice.

For much of the last fifteen years JJ spent most of his time covering wars, natural disasters, and revolutions for National Public Radio across the planet.. He ran NPR’s coverage of the Arab Spring in Egypt and Libya, was Baghdad Bureau Chief from 2004-2011, reported from Afghanistan and Lebanon, and served as Pentagon Correspondent. When not in war zones, JJ reported directly to senior management as a trouble shooter. He founded NPR's West Coast HQ, started three new news magazines, ran the online newsroom, produced every show at the network, and brought NPR into the social media age as NPR's first blogger.. His work has been recognized with multiple Overseas Press Club, Peabody, DuPont, and Edward R. Murrow awards.
